Moltitudine In Labirinto

Gigi Masin & Giuseppe Caprioli

Moltitudine in labirinto is a poetic journey drawn with sound. An unveiled meeting. The minimal sequences, the recognizable character of Masin’s music, here are fused with the electronic "vision" of Giuseppe Caprioli, more harsh, material. The result is a fascinating hybrid, a new modern music, leaden and grieved, lost voice in the maze of memories.

This CD, at the same time the new work of Masin and the "first time" for Caprioli, stands as a high expression in the lineage of evolution of the ever growing ambient/electronic scene.

Edition of 1000 copies. All transparent jewel case. Poetry and texts by Andrew Deutsch and Giuseppe Caprioli.

Zonacalda

Pierluigi Castellano

Zonacalda" is the literal translation for the biological/clinical words "Hot Zone", whose meaning is "deadly infective area". This work is about an inner journey, with a person infected by AIDS. "Zonacalda" talks about his personal trouble, psychological just before as physical. In the recitatives the actress Federica Santoro personifies the ill and in the airs the same role is committed to the baritone voice of Roberto Abbondanza. The texts of John Keats (1795 - 1821), Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749 - 1832) and Tito Lucrezio Caro (I sec. a.C.) were chosen and adapted by Francesco Antinucci for the three airs sung by Roberto Abbondanza.

The first air’s text (from Keats’ "Ode on a Grecian Urn") express considerations about art and the soft and sweet life soon to disappear; in the second air (from Goethe’s "Faust"), there is all the anguish for the near future and the refusal for science, which seem not to be able to defend the man; in the third air (from Lucrezio’s "De Rerum Natura"), we see the last period of the character’s life, with a final acceptance of suffering and, eventually, death.

Castellano’s music explicit itself in two distinct "voices" (instrumental and compositive), followed by two different approaches to the text. A personnel of exceptional musicians performs in a gifted vein: Roberto ABBONDANZA baritonal voice; Federica SANTORO actress; Paolo FRESU trumpet; Diego CONTI violin;Fabrizio SPERA percussions; Luca VENITUCCI keyboards, piano, melodica; Pierluigi CASTELLANO: keyboards, piano, computer orchestration, director and, special guest, Alvin CURRAN piano, shofar.
In few words, a formidable "opera", in strenght and beauty.
Enhanced CD, readable on any CD player - for the Audio section - and on any computer - both PC and Apple - for the Multimedia section. The Multimedia, in HTML format, is legible with any browser - Internet Explorer, Netscape - and include all the texts from the opera, an interview with the author and a discography.

Franco Degrassi & Lenoci

This proposal of the duo Degrassi/Lenoci is strictly linked to a form of electroacoustic improvisation, strongly characterized in a "material" sense. Lenoci's "traditional" instrumentation (piano and saxes) produce the sound and Degrassi "treat it" in real time.

The sounding continuum became part of the environment, it enter the space, it's a vital element.
Silence pervades the sounds, sometimes plaintive and immaterial, sometimes evident and strong.

Live recording made in St. Louis, USA, on May 16, 2001.

Cinque Pezzi

Luigi Di Giampietro

Five electroacoustic works of amazing beauty, stretched to the exploitation of the acoustic event and the discovering of the existent link between sound image and its perception. Technology is an instrument and a multi-level media. The use of the computer is "instrumental" in the deepest meaning of the term. The electronic element become expressive mean, intimately used.

The metallic streaking sounds ("Dalle volte dell'antro"), the circular noises ("La clessidra di cristallo"), the streams and the lovely "patchwork" of sound, excerpted from pieces of Luigi Nono (together with the "live" performance of Giancarlo Schiaffini and his trombone) in "Repetita Iuvant" – a piece recently awarded at the Prize for Electronic Composition "Pierre Schaeffer" - soon become distinctive elements of this music.
With the trombone of Giancarlo Schiaffini and the flute of Ubaldo Di Gregorio, special guests on two tracks

Welcome to my establishment. Our aim at Dave’s Waves is to provide you with the finest sonically transcendent experiences available today. That is why we use only the purest and most accurate of waveforms in our soundscapes. After undergoing intense measurement, these waveforms are lovingly combined, then tastefully overtoned and modulated to bring out the special essences that we hope Dave’s Waves is known for.
Sit down, get comfortable and enjoy your immersion. We hope you will return to Dave’s Waves again and again. And please tell your friends!
Your Host - David First"
The first "ants" international production comes with the new project by David First, one of the champions of the US experimental scene. It's a set of four long pieces, generated by the coupling of frequencies, pulsating drones designed to emulate and induce various states of brainwave activity. A static form that slowly modify itself in time. A new experience!

Prakriti

Alessandro Fogar

A hommage to Giacinto Scelsi. 'Prakriti' (from the Sanskrit word meaning 'nature' or 'cosmic energy'), is an exploration of nature through transformation of natural sounds and integration of them with static drones obtained mainly stretching and granulating orchestral sounds.
All the sound is generated by a real time system, producing an infinite and ever-changing combination of sound events, it has been built using SuperCollider2 on an Apple Macintosh computer.

Sounds from nature, recorded during a residence in Topolo`, a mountain village in Italy near the Slovenian border, are metabolized, transformed, distorted, decomposed, granulated. The raw materials are transformed focusing on granules and acoustic micro-particles, on the microsound level and then mixed with orchestral sampled sounds. The author acts by controlling the evolution of the work and the generation of new sound events, mixing and spatializing their stratification, composing the silence.

The enhanced CD is completed by the video "Uomini che guardano nascere" by Francesco Paladino, with the Fogar's soundtrack. An poetical elaboration of looks, restless, in a certain way.
Enhanced CD, readable on any CD player - for the Audio section - and on any computer - both PC and Apple - for the Multimedia section. The Multimedia, in MPEG format, is legible with any video viewer QuickTime, Windows Multimedia Player.

Organ And Silence

Tom Johnson

A music concerned for, as the author writes in the disc notes, "… the importance of silence in music…". This work is conceived not "for organ" but, really, for "organ and silence", as the silence is a fundamental part of it, and it’s not possible to give it up. It’s an attempt, as the author explain " to permit as much silence as possible, without allowing the music to actually stop".

Tom Johnson is one of the masters of minimalism, but he combines this with rigorous logic. His work, free from false glitters, defines, better that any other one, the sense of a research the goes beyond the strict genre definitions, and become poetic application of original ideas.

Recorded in Nerinx, in Kentucky, spring 2001 - Wesley Roberts, organ.
Edition of 1000 copies. All transparent jewel case. 8 pages booklet with author's notes and bios, in Italian and English

West Mantra

Salvatore Linguido

Salvatore Linguido is from Genoa. The music in this CD is for programmed piano. A West Mantra, synthesis and technological echo of eternal music. A work of research that we like to call "iper-serialist", where the approach is not the "construction inside a scheme ", but the more subversive one of the re-construction of many schemes, born from the minimal changes of a structure. A music where there is an enormous, sometimes obsessive, attention to the single sound and the juxtaposition of sounds. The schematic and "cold" element make this music a kind of book of exercises, spiritual and "audible". It’s a new, religious, ecology of the ear, where the sound generate itself continuously avoiding the common places of the "music for piano", and trusting great attention from the the listener. West Mantra reflects itself in the rigour of the unpolluted.

Themes

Salvatore Linguido

Themes is a classic exercise of variations on a theme. Basic the idea, essential, almost primal, the elaboration.

The Linguido's challenge (as in the first CD "West Mantra") is that of fascination by mean of "habit". The rhythms and throbbings of percussive sounds became part of the sound environment. The cadenced proceeding finds its aesthetical way in the fast exposition (the thirty tracks cover a range from 30 seconds to two minutes). It clarify a mechanism, an idea, a reflection.

The drum sound, so daily familiar to us, becomes an ideal mean to represent the need of "purity" that's the force behind the author's work with sound. Themes is a journey on personal liberation. It unrolls in the obstinate construction of little sound cells (almost anachronistic, because made with machines, "forced" by the man's hand) and realize itself in the making of a revealed world, an iperrealistic soundtrack for our daily life.
