Vonn New is an improvisor, composer, spoken-word and installation artist. Her intention as an artist is to promote peace-building and non-violence by modeling the power of listening, and the expression of defiant joy. She has been known to play just for fun, however. Most of her music is tonally simplistic and rhythmically complex because she's a nerd who enjoys playing with prime numbers.
As founding member of the music and dance ensemble, Loud Zoo www.loudzoo.net, Vonn is the Zoo Keeper (i.e.,music director) and plays percussion, flutes, keys, and found objects. Vonn performed in Pauline Oliveros' "Lunar Opera: Deep Listening For_Tunes" at Lincoln Center in the summer of 2000 playing instruments she designed. Her composition, 'Concerto for Cubicle', played entirely on office equipment, was programmed in the 2002 Southeast Composers Forum. In 2003 and 2004 she created "Dreaming in Proximity of Mars", a project that has been 2 different sound installations and a bellydance ballet. In 2005, she performed her composition "Stargrind", in collaboration with video artist Diana Slattery, at the Atlantic Center for the Arts as part of DLI's Domeworks Project. She has released 4 self-published CD's and is working on a fifth. Vonn earned her Deep Listening certificate in August 2004.
In addition, Vonn works full-time as a social justice activist. She is the Central Florida Director for Equality Florida www.eqfl.org, the statewide organization that advocates for equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Florida. She is a co-founder of Polytampa, a polyamory discussion group, and serves on the board of directors of the EMIT Concert Series.
Vonn is a lesbian parent of 2 sons and lives in St. Petersburg, FL.
